a little tired

Current Mood:Easterish emoticon Easterish

First week back is always a bit of a shock to the system and consequently I feel knackered and very relieved it’s Friday! The children have continued to be very well behaved – apart from a little blip yesterday morning when a supply teacher was in while I did some assessing. Next step is to engrave in these children’s minds that their good behaviour shouldn’t be just for me. That, in fact, it’s for themselves…..that they should take pride in their behaviour. I’ve often asked them to compare how they feel when they do something good with how they feel when they let themselves down. I will continue to impress this on them for the next term as within a few months they’ll have a new teacher.

This year’s class has been a struggle right from the start but I’m very happy with how they’ve improved. I hope I never, ever reach the stage where one of my children has to be excluded. I heard on the news this morning that 60 Reception age children were expelled from their schools in the UK last year! That’s 4 and 5 year olds like I have! I can’t imagine that ever happening at our school. It’s like giving up on a child…where else can they go? In the past I’ve been kicked and punched in the tummy, other teachers have had the most abusive language hurled at them and yet we still persist with these kids and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dave’s come home this evening very concerned about his mum who has a chest infection. She’s been on antibiotics since the beginning of the week but he’s only just discovered that she’s been unable to keep them down. He just called out her doctor who’s given her something to counteract the nausea. And now we’re hoping that the antibiotics will work. Dave had been hoping that they would take her into hospital as he feels she needs to be on oxygen as her breathing is so bad. Unfortunately the hospital which she would go to seems to be very short of beds. A friend of mine went into the same hospital two weeks ago to have a lump removed from her breast, she’d been in for a day recuperating and at 8.00 am the following day, a nurse came and said that they needed her bed. She assumed they meant later on but it transpired that they needed it there and then! She had to get dressed and go and sit elsewhere while someone else moved into her bed!

Here’s a photo of some beautiful tulips and roses Dave bought me earlier in the week.

  2. OH, yes, Nikki, I’m just drained completely after the first week back, too. At least I’m not the only one who feels this way LOL. I had a somewhat disappointing observation this morning, and that just capped it off. Long story, but I have a very disturbed boy who walked out of class when I wasn’t looking, and the supervisor asked me where he went. I had no clue! Shit happens, right? Oh, well, tomorrow is a new day. I think we may indulge in a little Mexican food tonight just to get a margarita. I’m sorry to read about Dave’s Mom and hope she has a good recovery this weekend. Beautiful tulips, you lucky girl!

  3. that’s awful about the hospital beds.

And awful about all the excluded kids from school. At that age too! I have to say that it can’t be down to the schools, bad behaviour stems elsewhere. I am reminded of the story I read about this week, where some idiot woman was given a suspended sentence after she made a 2 and 3 year old fight each other, encouraging them to call each other names and use things as weapons. What on earth is wrong with someone to do such a stupid thing? oh, and of course she videoed it on her phone. stupid moron. Great idea, start kids off as such a young age and just watch them turn into drug taking criminals of the future. I think her sentence shouldn’t have been suspended, she should have been banged up to really learn a lesson.

    Anyway, moving on.
sorry you are feeling so worn out. :( I’ve sent you an email with some piccies in it.

    have a great day xxx

  5. Hi Nikki It must be wearing teaching small children but as you say you can’t give up on them. The early years shape them for adulthood and if they are excluded as children, things are not going to get any better. I hope Dave’s mother improves. That must be a worry for you both. How terrible about your friend who had to vacate her bed :( What lovely flowers. I hope you have a relaxing and re-energising weeken xxxx

  7. Hello Nikki, I imagine how tiring it is to get back to school. You sound like a wonderful teacher, I do agree with everything you wrote. I hope Dave’s mom feels better soon, I imagine what a worry it is. I can’t believe the beds being so rare in hospitals, it’s terrible. I don’t really know how it is here though. Your flowers are gorgeous, it’s lovely to have Charlie & Travis graphic. It’s very well done. Now I know why you pick Travis as anti spam word, I didn’t realize before. Big hugs
