films a ~ z

Current Mood:out and about emoticon out and about

a for Atonement which we went to see this afternoon. z for Zodiac which watched on DVD last night. Both 5 star films in my opinion! I’ll start with Zodiac, a David Fincher film I’d been hoping to see at the cinema a few months ago but never did. However I think it probably came off just as well on the small screen (unlike Atonement which probably fairs best on the big screen). Zodiac is a true life account of a serial killer who terrorised San Francisco and baffled the police in the 1960’s and 70’s. A real whodunnit which keeps you hooked and guessing all the way through.

Atonement couldn’t have been more different. Set in the 1930’s and 40’s with backdrops of an English stately home and then later on  the beaches of Dunkirk, the central love story sweeps backwards and forwards and a mistake made by the young sister of the leading lady has far reaching and tragic effects. I’ve been waiting for this film for a good while now and I was not disappointed. Everything about it was stunning including the two leads, both of whom match each other in beauty and acting……. take tissues if you go! There’s a trailer here. And I have to post a photo of James McAvoy and Keira Knightley.

On the way home we stopped off at Sainsbury’s to buy something for tea so that we don’t have to cook. Beef stew, dumplings, mash and savoy cabbage….YUM!! Dave goes back to work tomorrow after having nearly six weeks off. I think he’s quite looking forward to it although he did very much enjoy last week when he spent virtually all the time fishing!

  1. Hi Nikki Thanks for the reviews, I have been wanting to see Atonement too and glad to hear it is as good as it seemed from the trailers. Did Dave like it? Derrant is a so-and-so for falling asleep in the cinema if the film doesn’t grab his attention so often it’s better/less annoying to go with a girlfriend. Your beef stew sounds nice, I did a roast for 2 o’clock so we’re both full and no tea or very little at least is required. Your new class sound as though they are settling in well. I hadn’t really thought about the impact of an only child versus ones with siblings at school. Because I worked full-time from when Holly was 3 months old she was constantly mixing with other children at Nursery and with Child-minders and when my MIL had her one day a week she took her to a Mother & Toddler group at the local church. Even when I stopped working she still went to Playgroup two mornings a week so by the time she went to school she was completely used to the “system” :) I am so interested in the Interactive boards, they sound like a brilliant tool in the classroom. I hope you’ll be telling us more about them as you use them more. Hope Dave settles back into work again after his long break (Probably after about 10 minutes he will feel like he’s never been away!) Have a good week xxxx

  2. I’d better not watch Atonement then, I’d blub like a good ‘un! :em22: I am curious to see Keira’s clothes though. She is so beautiful and lovely and slim. I get really annoyed with her though, she’s always bleating on in mags about how she hates her body and it’s a pain being so pretty!!! :em42: Get a grip girl, there are worse things than that to have annoying you in life!!!

Anyway. just a quick hello as I need to get moving. Hope you have a great day xxxx

  7. ok. I shall try again! Yes, I am using IE. :em20:

So glad JD has gone from HK. Think Anneka might get the boot tonight, she’s the one who hasn’t been shown very much. I think it will be between her and Paul, but she will go. I actually think Abigail is going to win, she’s quite quietly confident and determined.

Right. Am going to click this comment and hope that it sticks!

hope you had a good day today xxxx :em70: x

  9. Atonement sounds like a wonderful movie, I love the costumes from the photo. When you write about Sainsbury it always reminds me an English commercial with a cat & a Beardie who catch burglars thanks to Sainsbury cans. It’s hilarious & probably a bit old but it stayed a classic for Beardie people :) Have a great weekend! Big hugs
