many thanks….

…..to everyone for the kind words regarding Dave’s mum. They were very much appreciated. Dave has been inconsolable at times but yesterday and today he’s been kept busy with sorting out paperwork and making arrangements for the funeral. Luckily he hasn’t had to do it on his own as his elder sister has shared the responsibility. They have a younger brother as well who lives in Coventry. I said that I would write more as time went on …….

you may remember that on Friday I posted that Dave was very concerned about his mum and felt she needed to be in hospital. On Saturday afternoon she collapsed at home (she lived with Dave’s sister and brother-in-law near us). She was taken by ambulance to the nearest A&E which is about 12 miles from where we live. Dave and I went over to be with her. When we were allowed in, we were told that she had a bowel obstruction and that she was very poorly. We talked to her and tried to ease her anxiety. The surgeon felt it was necessary to operate immediately…..by now it was a life or death situation. She was very frightened but Dave was amazing and comforted her as much as he was able. They took her down to theatre and told us it would be a 4-5 hour operation. So we decided to pop home so that Dave’s sister, who had by then arrived, could do a dialysis exchange. We had only been home for about ten minutes when we had a call to say that we needed to return immediately as her heart had failed as they started to anaesthetise her. We then had about twenty minutes with her before she passed away. It was a tremendous shock and a post mortem will be held so that the cause of the obstruction can be established. The funeral won’t be until the 11th May and it will be followed by a little ceremony a few weeks later when her ashes will be interred in the same plot as Dave’s dad’s. She was a lovely lady, very kind and generous. She was widowed over thirty years ago and never did get over the loss of her husband. Dave’s dad died at the age of 50 from the same disease that Dave and his brother and sister have (Polycystic Kidney Disease).

On a cheerier note, I just wanted to post a photo of a beautiful jug that I’ve just wrapped up to give to a friend who’s birthday is tomorrow. (I’m finding it tough to give it away!). It’s by a wonderful artist called Gisela Graham who’s work I’ve long admired. You can see more of her work by looking here. The children’s things are particularly worth a look!

  3. Hello, Nikki. It’s so sad about Dave’s mom. I hope she didn’t suffer too much, but I’m sure she was terrified. I visited the Gisela Graham site and was enchanted by her children’s things. So charming! Your gas comment made me thankful for what we have here in that area. You’re evidently paying twice as much as we are for gas, not a good thing. I will take you up on the calendar customization offer at some point. That’s about the only thing I don’t care for with the Blue Zinfandel theme. I would also like to get your random siggie script whenever you get a chance. No hurry as I’m sure we’re both busy with school things. Thinking of you through your time of bereavement. Hugs, Julia

  7. Hi Nikki I hadn’t realised that it all happened so quickly – no wonder you’re all in such shock. It’s never an easy time but that sounds particularly difficult for you all. Thinking of you both. Thank you for sharing the Gislea Graham items – I have book marked the site – they have some very different things. Lots of love xxxx
