nine days off :o)

Yes it’s the summer half term, the one in which I start writing the dreaded reports! Twenty eight to write this year, each containing six A4 sides. But I’m not going to fret over it (as I usually do). I have about five weeks to get them written and I intend to spend a couple of day next week devoted to them, hopefully getting about a third of them done.
It’s been an excellent week at school. I decided that I’d make bread with the kids using my breadmaking machine plus flapjacks and cheese straws so that we could have a picnic this afternoon. Luckily the rain held off although it looked quite stormy at times. The flapjacks and cheese straws were made earlier in the week and then yesterday we made a white loaf and today we made a wholemeal. The kids were fascinated by the process and we had a vote at the end of the picnic for the bread they liked best and wholemeal won, which I was really pleased about, especially as quite a few of the children who liked it best said they eat white at home!

Our topic has been all about food, particularly healthy food and I think they’ve just about got an understanding of what’s good and not so good for them. It can be quite tricky getting it right as the last thing I want to do is create eating problems so I tend to say that certain foods are only not so healthy for us if we eat lots and lots of them. The sugar aspect is easily covered by saying that too much is bad for our teeth. Apart from printing with and painting fruit plus doing a pizza collage, we also made some place mats which were made by weaving paper strips. I’ll laminate them for the children over the holidays.

I’m looking after my friend’s spaniel, Bertie, this weekend, he’s Charley’s half brother and he’s a sweetie, if a little nuts! The other photo is of my new bag which arrived on Wednesday and is even more gorgeous in real life! It’s by Ollie and Nic and you can view more of their work here.

Heartfelt congratulations to my two friends at work who did their 26 mile walk through London early on Saturday morning. Walking with them was the 14 year old daughter of one of them. Although she hit ‘the wall’ a couple of times she kept going to the end and we’re all amazingly proud of her! Lots of money raised for Breast Cancer research.

Dave had his three monthly check up at the renal clinic yesterday and his doctor is very pleased with him I’m happy to say. He even said that when we go on holiday in August Dave could actually do without his dialysis for the week as he’s doing so well! That will make things so much easier for us!

Lastly, have to just show off my latest Lillyskites adoption which I adore :) I do have quite a number of new adoptions which I haven’t got around to adding to my site, something I must do on my days off.

  1. thought I’d stop by and read the ‘boring stuff’!!!! So wrong you are not boring at all. Love the woven mats. They turned out very well :) Good idea too, little ‘uns have to concentrate on that, I remember weaving at school.

love the bag. Ollie & Nic have some lovely stuff. If I remember rightly, there is a shop in Lakeside that sells their stuff, I always have a little glance when I get the chance (admittedly, have not been for years now. Am hoping Humbug will soon be up for a mini shopping trip !)
Your class is lucky to get to make bread, never did anything like that ‘back in the day’!
Got a busy day ahead. shopping this morning, then this p.m, might trot along to the beach with Bill and the girl. I won’t let him take her by himself, don’t trust him to watch her at all times. Just this morning he managed to make her fall over. He wanted to put the stair gate over the top of the stairs before she left the room, so put his foot across the door in an attempt to hold her back so he could nip out and shut the gate. Of course, all this did was make her trip up. I had a go at him, but it kind of reinforces that he is an idiot man at the end of the day!
Must jump in the shower. Have a lovely day xxxx
    yey, you’re on hols!

  2. Hi Nikki, thanks for coming by and yes we did know what was going on via the radio and TV, scary stuff.. good that it wasn’t worse and the police acted quickly.
The only question most seem to have was why Thursday, today is a big day in the city with something going on. but hey ho .. who knows why in these things.
Well done on your friends with the walk.
Have fun with the extra dog in the household, what a cutie
Well done too on Dave, given the start of the year, to this is great :D
Have a super holiday break and don’t work too hard with the reports

  3. What a fun post. Your children are so lucky to have such a creative teacher! Yes, I am at that lovely beginning of summer point. It’s been such a busy week I can’t seem to stop spinning. One has to adjust. We just got back from meeting Matthew and family at the new house – a little moving in celebration. Her family came down to help; lots of support from both sides. Love the new bag!Love the blog design, too. I need to work on mine – making a mess but will have time to get it right this time. Right? Hope your Sunday is lovely. Oh, best of news about Dave. Hugs, Julia

  4. Hi Nikki! Been too long since I visited! We do a unit with food two times a year. In the spring we plant pumpkin seeds and grow them through summer. Then in fall we harvest them with the new class and cut them cook the pumpkin and make pumpkin bread! Yummy! We also count the seeds for math and cook them to eat too. It is fun with the kids and they are amazed at the process of getting to the bread! I only have 8 1/2 more days til we are done for summer. I can’t wait! Have a wonderful day. Hugs

  7. Wowee! You have a total redo here. It’s very glam, and I love it. Isn’t it fun to have the leisure to play with your blog? I had Alexander Sunday afternoon through last evening but have today off. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do with myself; it’s like a kid in a candy store – too many options. Hope you have a wonderful day. Hugs, Julia
