patience is a virtue..

…and although for much of the day I kept my cool, by the end of the day it was wearing thin! The world and his wife must have decided to go shopping in Peterborough yesterday…. all enjoying the benefits of payday? We queued for ages for diesel before we even left, queued for an eternity to get into town, queued to park, queued to pay for a ticket, queued at every shopping counter, queued forever to have coffee and cake. It was more like the week before Christmas than an unremarkable day in September!

Before we arrived and we were sitting in the queue to get into town, I looked in my diary and realised that my next payday wouldn’t be until AFTER our holiday…..oh, S***!! And there was me thinking I’d get paid before we went so that I could Christmas shop, HA! Well that pretty much put the kybosh on a big shopping spree but there were a couple of things I really needed. One was a black cardigan and the other was a pair of lace up, high heeled brogues. Well I got neither of them! After seeing heaps of cardigans in the fashion mags I hardly saw any. I saw a few versions of the shoes or shoots (as they’re being called here, what is this obsession with combining words to make a new one???!) but they were either ridiculously pricey or out of my size! However, I did get a few spoils instead ( couldn’t come home with nothing could I?!). I treated myself to a new pair of slippers from Next (beings as the hounds have taken over my old ones). A top/dress from Next which I can wear with or without trousers so long as I wear my black opaques. Plus a fab Autumn inspired skirt from M&S. Please note that I’ve left my camera cable at school so haven’t bothered to take pics. I’ve just trawled the websites for already taken photos instead. A couple of things to note: my slippers are like the cream ones only they’re black with cream polka dots, the skirt is crying out for black opaques, not as in the picture with bare legs…oh and on me it’s just above the knee not mini!! So all in all I didn’t do too badly, oh and when I got back I found some perfect new black brogues on eBay :)

I was thrilled to discover that M&S are at last finding their muse again! I worked out that the last time I bought something from them was about seven years ago when I bought a delicious black leather knee length coat (not nearly as kinky as it sounds!!). Since then their clothes have been (in my opinion) appalling. I only had to walk in, take a quick scan and I just knew without going any further that there was nothing for me. It wasn’t necessarily the styles, it was the colours and the prints! Every season the shades of colour have been so wrong……many’s the time I’ve been tempted to write to them and offer my services  How I would’ve loved to have put them on the right track (again in my opinion of course!). The prints and colours just looked so cheap to me. Such a shame as M&S are a great British institution and they do get a lot of things right including the scrummy food and the much more tasteful homewear. Having said that there are still lots of things I can’t stand such as the awfully fussy Per Una range. And having a quick look through the website hasn’t inspired me terribly. Yesterday I saw an absolutely gorgeous jacket, very simple, single breasted, collar, fitted, which came in black and a beautiful shade of bright pink. There were only one of each left, both in size 8 (hmm, six years ago, yes, but now? No way!). I can’t find it anywhere on the site so I’m assuming it’s flown from the shelves :(

Anyway, enough about shopping and spending, I could go on and on for hours! One of the reasons I didn’t post anything for a week was because my brand new school laptop broke midweek. (I’ll be getting a replacement early this week) . Now that Autumn is here, the tv miraculously starts showing programmes which are actually watchable. So I tend to be online in front of the telly so I don’t miss anything. Well being laptop-less that was obviously impossible therefore not much blogging going on. Can’t wait to get it back!

Last but not least, in case my Mum reads this, have a wonderful holiday!! She’s flying off to Madeira on Tuesday for a week. Since my Dad died in 1998, she’s been gadding about all over the place…one year she went to Canada for a couple of weeks. I think it’s great and quite a feat as she usually goes on her own and makes lots of new friends. Anyway, hope it’s fab, Mum!

  1. Hi Nikki It sounds as though you did very well after a rocky start :) I like the polka dot slippers, they are cute. And the tunic and skirt are lovely too. Our traffic into town was queuing miles back, further than it would be on a Christmas Saturday, the same as you, how odd. I was pleased I wasn’t going all the way into town yesterday. Everything I have bought in Marks recently has been very plain, linen skirts and t-shirts. I’ve even started buying my undies at Asda – shock, shock, horror, horror. Gosh that’s not on, having your laptop break down already. I keep thinking I would like one to “multi-task” but I find it difficult to concentrate on writing anything just with the radio on, so I would be hopeless with the TV on. Hope your Mum has a wonderful holiday, I hear that Maderia is delightful. Lots of love xxx

  2. Hi Nikki, You did pretty good on your shopping trip, guess you’ll have to go again for the Christmas presents, it’s a tough job but someone has to do it. :em32: The weather here is still lovely it’s sunny and 18C, it’s supposed to be nice all week, fingers crossed. I need to go shopping for a couple of tops, but I just can’t get in the mood, which is strange for me. I didn’t see Number 23 but I thing hubby did and he said it was good. We saw The Walker last night with Woody Harrleson, Lauren Bacall and Kristen Scott-Thomas. I liked it, it was a real treat to see Ms. Bacall in this film, they don’t make stars like this anymore. Have a nice week. *hugs*

  5. hello!
Are you watching Nigella on a Monday night? Can’t understand all this fuss people are making, about how it’s not really her kitchen *shock, the utter horror!* or how ‘bad’ it was that the beeb hired a bus for her to be filmed on to snaffle her goodies or go shopping in. Come on! As if it matters. They are missing the point, and the point is that we are all busy and her cooking is quick, easy(ish) and can be scoffed on the go.
That said, I was roaring with laughter watching her scoffing noodles on the bus yesterday, or drinking the pea soup. She said she had a ‘pretty full on’ day, yet all we saw was her guzzling soup: on the bus, in a taxi, in the park! So, full on day sightseeing then?!

Jamie’s new programme is called ‘Jamie at home’,but I don’t think he is at home, he’s in someone’s garden, but I don’t know if it’s his or not. Where’s the fuss about that?

It’s just because Delia always does her shows from her home kitchen, which is fine, but not every TV cook wants to have cameras set up in their home. Delia had her kitchen done to work well with cameras, that’s why she does it.

Everyone criticises Nigella, but I love her. She makes me laugh, she’s such a Stepford wife. I wonder if she really smiles that much in real life? I remember when I started buying Vogue back in the late 80′s, she was their food writer. I get quite irritated when people make out she isn’t a geuine cook or interested in food, because she knows an awful lot about it. And I am a huge fan of her cookware.

On a not so positive note, I thought her chicken legs could have done with a bit longer in the oven, especially as they were for a kids picnic. Talking of which, chicken legs and coleslaw for a picnic!! Wow, where were the sarnies? cakes? flasks of tea? Scotch eggs!!!!

right. I am off. Hope you are having a good start to the week. Been a bit chilly hasn’t it? Absolutely fab!

    xxxx
