plum is the colour…

..of nearly everything I’m buying at the moment, I wonder if it’s an indication of mood or just down to the fact that it’s the in colour at the moment?!

Firstly though, news on Dave’s hospital visit. As expected, his consultant was concerned to see Dave’s high creatinine, potassium and phosphate levels. Creatinine indicates how the kidneys are performing and the level showed a sharp decline meaning that Dave’s kidneys are now virtually dead. Because of this, his dialysis regime is now totally inadequate and he needs to dialyse throughout the day rather than just at night. I won’t go into the if’s and but’s that this involves as we’ll deal with that when the time comes. Because the dialysis was being ineffective this meant that the potassium was not being cleared from his body and had reached a dangerously high level. It’s also thought that the tablets he was taking to get rid of the phosphates are not effective enough so he’s going to try an alternative as well as complete a food diary so that the dietician can pinpoint where the problem lies.

When we got home it occurred to me that had Dave not had the forethought to go and have his blood tests done (his idea!) before his appointment, our visit would have been quite different. None of us would have been aware that the dialysis was now inadequate! As his appointment was the last of the day, there would have been no blood tests done then, either (he has to go back next week to have more done). So it would have been another week or so before we’d be aware that things were awry. Potassium at the level that Dave’s was at can be life threatening as it can make the heart just stop! But this is how our hospital (and others for all we know) works. People go for their three monthly (or whatever) appointments and have a blood test done afterwards. I suppose that’s fine with some illnesses but with kidney disease it’s vital to be up to date with those results. Anyway, we’re now waiting to find out what they propose he should do dialysis wise and we’re monitoring his diet very, very carefully.
On to happier and more frivolous things! We bought our sumptous new duvet and had enough money left to buy a beautiful new bedset (which is where plum comes in!). The lotus flowers are appliqued and embroidered beautifully.

Today was Dday2 for Charley and her beau of two years Cosmo. Suffice to say that we may be hearing puppy footsteps later this year!
Having spotted another gorgeous bag, a Jasper Conran this time, while shopping last week, I made the fatal mistake of going to take another look today………. and now it’s all mine….. and it’s plum

  3. Hi Nikki Goodness me, we are so much in the hands of the healthcare “professionals” – In the main they do a wonderful job but when you hear things like Dave’s story where there are unacceptable delays because of poor planning it is infuriating. Thank goodness he thought to get the blood tests done so they can start looking at ways to get everything back on track. I hope you can soon pinpoint somethings in his diet that will make a difference. Love all your plummy purchases – the bedding looks very lush. I always have to go very plain (white or cream) with bedding as our bedroom is decorated in a sort of “Indian Restaurant on speed” style – sadly there are other areas that need attention before I can redcorate in there! Your handbag looks as soft as butter, very yummy. Hope your weekend is fun lots of love xxxx

  5. Hi Nikki, I love all the plum purchases you made, plum is in this season. Hope the doctors will find the right meds to stabilize his condition. I see you are listening to Elbow, I love their song On a Day Like This. I do want to read The Island, right now I’m reading the Kite Runner. Hope you’re having a nice Sunday. *hugs*

  6. Ciao Nikki. Hope the doctors will find an appropriate diet for Dave *fingers crossed*. Hubby and I finally managed to post a recipe in our Blog. We chose Bônet, a typical recipe from Piemonte (my region). Can you believe it was the only food I used to eat when I was 4 y/o? ;) Can you imagine a Kia lacking in appetite? LOL! ;)

  7. testing.. just checking!

I just don’t know what to say about Dave. It’s a blessing that he was on the ball enough to want blood tests earlier. I am so sorry that the news has not been good, but I like how positive you – both of you – are, and looking on the bright side of things. Not sure how our hospital does things, I avoid them like the plague, but my older brother has to go for six monthly check ups (testicular cancer), but I would hope they do things the ‘right’ way round with him. In fact, thinking about it, I feel pretty sure that he has bloods done first. Could be wrong though.

Loving that bag! You are so bad buying more bags. Worse than me I have to say  (she says, already planning her Christmas pressie this year!)
Am loving the bed set too. I really do like plummy colours, especially at this time of year.
Right. Time to scoot. Hope Charley is Sperminated! ;) xxxx
