thank goodness it’s over with

Dave had his hernia operation yesterday and thankfully there were no problems. Having said that, we’re not completely out of the woods yet, as he now has to go without dialysis for about two weeks. This is to allow the repair to heal up without any added stress from his dialysis fluid. Fingers firmly crossed that the mesh they used for the repair doesn’t get rejected or infected as this would severely compromise his ability to dialyse in the future. We also need to now watch his diet (again) and his blood pressure very closely while he’s not dialysing.

Yesterday was long and stressful. Dave had to arrive by 9 a.m., but the doctor we saw last week at the pre-op appointment told us (quietly!) to not rush over as his op wouldn’t be until late afternoon. We arrived at about 10 and were rather pleased we’d taken her advice as, being the last one in, he was given a room to himself complete with own loo, shower and tv! He then had a series of tests and visits, including a visit from the head man himself, Professor Nicholson, who is a pioneer in the field of kidney transplants. The Prof did the operation himself and I cannot stress too much how relieved we were by that! You see, Tuesday night, on buying a copy of the Daily Mail we were horrified to read the main headline ‘Don’t Be Ill Tomorrow’ which then proceeded to list a long list of scaremongering reasons why 1st August was the worst day of the year to have an operation!! Rather than go into detail here, if you’re unaware of what happened in the UK medical world yesterday, read here. Now you may understand the depth of our relief!

Anyway, Dave was eventually taken down to theatre at 3.30pm and didn’t return until after 7 p.m. I became quite anxious as the op was only supposed to take about 30 minutes. Turned out they were struggling to bring his pain under control. So what I got back was an extremely zonked out Dave! I didn’t hang around as he wasn’t even aware I was there, bless him. I spent the evening with my brother’s lovely girlfriend Angie … lots of vodka, just what I needed :)

We’re both home now, I came back by train and Dave got hospital transport. He’s been in bed since he got back which I think is the best place for him. What I need now is a little emoticon of me dressed as nurse :)

I’ve installed a music and video player at the bottom of the page. Seemed like a wonderful idea as it’s something I’ve been wanting to add forever now. Music is hugely important to me and therefore reflective of me also …….. so it needs to be part of my blog. However, I’m concerned that it may not be playing on other people’s computers. So I’d be grateful if, when/if you comment, you could mention whether it works for you, thanks!

I have my sound off most of the time so I had to turn it on to hear your music, but I love it. :) I know some people don’t like music on sites, but I am not one of them, I love it!

I’m glad all went well with Dave and the Top Man did the op. I shall keep my fingers crossed that Dave recovers quickly.

I don’t buy newspapers during the week, so missed that. Mind you, I try to avoid reading the papers at the weekend, and just grab the tv sections or the You magazine. Too much nasty news nowadays so I shut it out of my mind.

    sent you an email.
    have a lovely day xxxx

    p.s It’s Pimm’s weather today! (except I don’t have any so can’t have one!)

    Hello sweetie !
Ooooh great, music ! Like Sadie, I have sound off most of the time, but I turn it on as soon as I saw it was Fergie who was singing ! I love her (and the boys too ! – my boys I mean !! LOL)
I’m very happy Dave’s op went well, and boy, I wasn’t aware of what was happening on August 01st for you, British friends !

HI Nikki, Glad to hear Dave’s op went well and hope that there will be no infection. After reading the article about the first Wednesday in August, I think I would be concerned going into the hospital on that day. Have a nice weekend. *hugs*

Hi Nikki So glad that Dave’s Op is over with and that you had the best person for the job perfoming the surgery. Yes the headlines couldn’t have helped your peace of mind. I notice everyone else is admiring your music but actually all I’m getting is someone shouting “Yahoo” at regular intervals (That’s not your music is it? :) ) I expect I haven’t got something loaded but not sure where the “Yahoo-ing” is coming from. Meant to say I liked the look of “Atonement” too, James McAvoy seems to be flavour of the year and I can see why ;) , every time I’ve been to the cinema recently he has been in various trailers. The first time I saw him was in the BBC2 programme “Early Doors” Hope your weekend is fab lots of love xxxx

OH, Nikki, I feel I have neglected you during your time of greatest stress – not that I could have helped. Thank goodness it’s over. There is probably nothing much worse than sitting in a waiting room waiting for a loved one to emerge from surgery. At least you had that friend – and her potion – to turn to. I have not posted for two reasons: stupid Shingles pain/discomfort/weakness and nothing to say. Well, I have to go back to school nexst week, so I’ll just have to get ready. You and Dave are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Julia
