the shape of things to come

Dave’s sister is now on dialysis. She is a few months ahead of Dave so we have been given the opportunity to see what life will be like in the future. The type of dialysis Chris is using is called CAPD…..Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis. It involves doing an exchange four times a day. More information here if anyone is interested. Dave’s dialysis will be a little different in that he will be doing his exchange continuously throughout the night, we hope. Our main concern is having to have an almost sterile environment for him to do his exchange in. Infections are common and can be fatal if not dealt with in time. The amount of equipment needed is somewhat daunting, we will need to clear out a bedroom to store the boxes of dialysis fluids which are delivered in supplies of one month.
Well the weather has been decidedly changeable all week, today it’s pouring down and we’ve already had two thunderstorms with another on the way I think. We’ve had the exterior of our house painted this weekend and by pure luck, the decorators have managed to get it done during the sunny periods!

  2. Hi Nikki, it’s great that dialysis can be ambulatory, I didn’t know that. It’s tough though. Thinking of you & Dave, hugs, Elizabeth

  3. I didn’t even realize you could perform dialysis in the home or through the night. That sounds like a good approach to a difficult situation, though. You are holding up so well, being strong for whatever you will face, I know. Much love, Julia

  5. A difficult situation ahead for both of you. But it is better that having to go into hospital to have it done. Things seem to have changed a lot, for the better I think. Would Dave be happy with a transplant, Nikki? Is it something he would consider?
