the story so far…

Thanks so much to everyone who’s come across here today and left good wishes for Dave. Yesterday he went to work as usual. He’d been having some pain in the area where the peritioneal tube was put in a year ago but nothing of great concern. However, during the day yesterday, it got a little worse and as he had to visit a town not too far from the hospital, he thought he would go and get himself checked out. Turns out it was a lot more serious than either of us suspected.  He’d developed an infection behind the scar tissue….as the day went on, his tummy became more and more inflamed, red and hot. There was a large pocket of infection around the tube and the only answer was to remove it which is what they did about an hour ago. The tube was his lifeline for flushing out his defunct kidneys. The important thing at the moment is to make sure all of the infected fluid drains out……..peritonitis is the danger that patients on PD have all the time. Once they’re sure that’s ok then I’m presuming they’ll release him from hospital but at this point in time I have no idea when it will be. I spoke to him lots of times this morning and he was feeling fine. I just spoke to the staff nurse on his ward who’s told me that he’s had his op and is now fast asleep. Knowing what he’s been like with other ops, I doubt I’ll speak to him again now until the morning.

The hospital is 60 miles away. As I don’t drive, I’ll be catching buses and trains tomorrow so that I can visit him (visiting times are very strict and I can only be there for two hours). That means I’ll be leaving the house at around 10.15am and not returning until around 7.15pm so it’s going to be a lot of traveling!

As far as further dialysis goes, I’m in the dark about that at the moment. He won’t be able to do his normal method again until they, hopefully, replace the tube in a different site and we have no idea when that will be. If his blood tests show that he can’t manage without dialysing,  in the meantime he’ll have to have haemodialysis which I know he really doesn’t want. He has such awful memories of his dad on it many years ago although things have improved drastically since then! This has all come out of the blue and is a very bad blow :(

I don’t dare to click on the links and read more about the infection. I’ll stay ignorant, it sounds horrible enough :| Poor Dave. And poor you. I can imagine what a hard day’s travelling you will have :(

I’m so sorry for this Nikki. Especially at this time of year. I hope very much that Dave will soon be on the mend.

much love to you. And thanks for the little update you have just left for me. I bet you do miss him :( xxxxx

    Hi sweetie,
thank you so much for keeping me updated & for visiting. I’m so sorry this happened to Dave (and to you, as a consequence) at this time of the year. And typically during the holidays. Anyway.
It’s even harder given that the hospital is so far away from your home & that you don’t drive. I can’t imagine if something wrong happened to one of us four & that we’d have to go to the hospital, without car, that’d be really hard too. I feel for you, my friend, and wish you strength again for tomorrow. You must miss him tons & he must miss you tons too. I hope he feels better now & that he’ll be able to come home ASAP.
Thinking about you, my friend. Tell Dave I keep him in my thoughts.
OXOXOXOX Much love & positive vibes your way & Dave’s.
