update

Got home about an hour ago, tired but relieved to have seen Dave and to have taken him all the things he needed. Bless him, he didn’t have so much as a toothbrush as of course he wasn’t expecting to be going in. When I got there he was wearing two hospital gowns, one back to front to spare his blushes!

I spoke to him before I left home and he gave me good news to travel on. Provided he continues to improve, they will hopefully release him some time tomorrow. It depends on whether the swelling goes down and that they’re confident there’s no infection left…he’s being pumped full of anti-biotics. When they operated they were relieved to find that the swelling didn’t contain poisonous fluid (there’s a word for that stuff but I hate it so won’t use it!!). The surgeon thinks they intervened just in time, phew. Because of this they’re hoping to get a tube back in him within a couple of weeks which will mean he won’t have to do haemodialysis, yayyyy :) !! Of course both that and being released from hospital are very much dependent on how well the next 12 hours or so go, so at the moment I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much. What I desperately don’t want is for us to be apart on New Year’s Eve! But at the same time I don’t want him to come home if he’s not completely out of the woods, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

The journey was easy and non-eventful. One interesting thing…altogether the bus and train cost me £21, which I thought was pretty good for a 120 mile round trip. But then I had to get a taxi from the station to the hospital (and back again of course). Altogether the fares were £20 …. for about a 4 mile round trip!! Shocking….if I’d been more confident of the route I’d have walked it!

Again, grateful thanks for all the lovely words of support on here and by email, I really do appreciate it :)

  1. I was right to come back. :) I’m happy things seem to be better. I hope you will be able to be with him, one way or another, on New Year’s Eve. I wish you both the best of luck.
Try to have a good night, my friend. Thanks for keeping us posted.

  2. What dreadful news Nikki! I know there isn’t a good time ever but it is so hard when it happens at holiday time. You must have been so worried. Still it looks as if everything is better and I keep my fingers crossed that he will be back home for New Year’s Eve. But as you so wisely wrote if he is not ready to be back then the best place for Dave is spending another day there with the “experts”!
How is it that you don’t drive? Is your school near where you live then?

  4. I will be back to read properly in a bit, we’re just off to B&Q.

Read your comment though, and told Bill that Dave is in hospital tonight. He said that if you would like, he’ll drive up and pick you up and you can stay with us tonight. If you’d like to do that, just say the word. We don’t have any great plans, just a quiet night at home, and we have a lovely guest room :) genuine offer, so think about it and let me know.

    back later xx

  5. just read your comment…HURRAH! I am so pleased Dave is coming out. Thank goodness! Yes, it would have been fab to meet up, but I am sure an opportunity will arise at some point.I’m just glad you get your man back to see the new year in with. And yes, good to look at it as a postive. I am sure it’s just the shock of it all that floored you,and I would have been the same. Things always seem worse and more dramatic at this time, because we all want to be home over the festive season with our loved ones. To have someone so close in hospital must have been totally devastating.

I hope Dave can start off soon, and get home nice and early. Before all the drunken morons start getting behind the wheel.

lots of love to you, and you are welcome. LIke I said, it was a genuine offer and one Bill would gladly have done :)
